Our biggest tip for planning fall family photo outfits is to start with moms outfit first. It’s so much easier to pick a color and pattern that you will be comfy and confident in, then build the rest of your family’s outfits around it. For this first look, we picked this gorgeous ruffle dress for mom. With the dress being a statement in itself, we pulled a simple long-sleeve crewneck and chino pants for dad, making sure to include the colors from the dress. This plaid swing dress is absolutely adorable for your daughter and will photograph well. We pulled a similar plaid poplin shirt for the boys to make sure all of the kiddos are cohesive.
If you want dad to have a fun pattern, plaid is perfect for fall. We pulled this plaid shirt for dad and paired it with some dark blue jeans. If you want to keep your look a little more simple, you can opt for a solid dress or blouse, just make sure everyone else’s outfits fit your color scheme. We grabbed this cute mock-neck dress because it will look great next to dads plaid shirt. If you have a sweet new addition to your family, we love the idea of pairing overalls with a knit onesie underneath. Soooo cute! For your daughter, you can never go wrong with a swing dress and a pair of booties. We grabbed this one because it will look perfect next to moms dress!

This smocked peplum dress is a gorgeous shade of green perfect for this time of year. Sticking with a fall color palette is a must, especially if you are taking your photos outside. The colors will look beautiful with the colors of the trees and landscaping. We put dad in a flannel shirt and dark wash jeans for this look. We picked a different color for your daughters dress. You can definitely incorporate more than one color and this is an example of doing so!
Burgundy is a stunning fall color that looks beautiful in photos. This eyelet ruffle mini dress is absolutely adorable and will likely be a staple piece in your wardrobe all season long. You can have your son match with you by wearing a polo in the same shade. Then, have your husband and daughter match. It will look so good together and it’s not just one color overwhelming the picture.

If you are shopping at a higher price point for these outfits, J. Crew is a great option for high-quality clothing. How cute is this tie-waist mini dress? This polo cardigan sweater will look great on camera and compliment your dress perfectly. We found a dress for your daughter that is similar to the one you will have on, but we opted for a different color. To ensure the look stays cohesive, we recommend putting your son in a shirt matching your daughter.
This last outfit is for those of you who prefer a few different colors in your family portraits. Everyone is wearing a different color all from similar color palettes so it works well. This is our take, but mix and match the colors that suits you and your family best. At the end of the day, it’s all about what you and your family feel comfortable in. If you are comfortable you will be confident in what you are wearing and that will radiate in your photos.
